From design and set out\, to required materials\, processing\, mixing and construction\, in a fun supportive and social environment. \nYou can use the workshop just to learn how to make a pizza oven\, but it is also a great introduction to some of the materials and techniques used in “Natural Building” – an approach to architecture and building that seeks sustainable\, environmentally and human friendly building solutions\, using minimally processed\, abundant\, non toxic raw materials namely: clay\, sand\, stone\, natural fibres and wood. \nWorkshop co-ordinators: \nBlue Forsyth. 027 3806378\nWith a passion for natural building developed over more than 25 years\, Blue has worked on a wide variety of building projects using cob\, straw bale and adobe (mud) brick including the restoration of some of our country’s most treasured earth based heritage buildings. The art of timber framing dates back to some of man’s first primitive structures; using large greenwood timbers slotted together to form stunning\, natural structures without the need for nails. This course gives you a hands on approach to learning this craft. \nOver a week’s tuition you will gain a broad understanding of calculating\, crafting and building a timber frame structure. DESCRIPTION:Kerry Mulligan is offering 3 workshops\, and each runs for 2 days:\nWorkshop 1: Monday 12th & Tuesday 13th Nov 9am-3pm\nWorkshop 2: Wednesday 14th & Thursday 15th Nov 9am-3pm\nWorkshop 3: Friday 16th & Saturday 17th Nov 9am-3pm \nIt is so fortunate that Kerry Mulligan has collaborated with Richmond Community Garden to make this workshop series possible. Learning these skills will give you a strong sense of earth-building and the variety of techniques involved. We love this work\, as it doesn’t get more directly resourceful than creating a building from the ground up with clay & sand\, and other natural materials like straw and lime. \nThrough this workshop: Earth Building Techniques and Practice\, Kerry will share with you how to use natural materials for building beautiful and practical shelter. You’ll leave knowing how these techniques use low embodied energy\, local materials and hands and feet as tools to build a human scale building. \nEarth buildings use unprocessed and untreated materials for building so the air quality in an earth building is very high\, and this type of construction also regulates the humidity in the air so these buildings typically do not have moisture issues. The unprocessed nature of the materials minimises carbon emissions as no or little machinery is used. \nThe workshops are being held in Richmond Community Garden just behind Avebury House at 9 Eveleyn Couzins Ave\, Richmond\, Ōtautahi Christchurch. \nThere workshops are not suitable for children under 12\, and children aged 12 to 15 will need an adult with them please.
