external render to cob ---John Le Harivel---hdprojectmgr@historic.org.nz---01/ 09/ 10
Any one know of good sources of knowledge and/or experience of external render in repairs for historic cob buildings, also adobe blocks. We have a number of cob and adobe historic buildings which are going to be repaired in the next few years. We have done some plastering at Hayes Engineering Works at Otehura in the Ida Valley Otago already. We are in touch with Blue Forstyh and the volunteers at Cotons Cottage Hororata have experimented with various mixes over the years, with varying results. (only just recently joined NZHPT as PM and interestingly no one in NZHPT seems to have heard of EBANZ,which surprises me, but I am doing my bit to publicise your existance!)

Cob houses and fire places---Sandie---minnielump@hotmail.com---29/ 07/ 10
Just wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a building code or such like as to whether NZ consider cob to be combustible? I am having to replace my existing wood burner, due to the new clean air regulations and my council can't agree and have told me it's my responsibility to tell them if it is or isn't!!! This was not an issue 20 years ago when I put in a European wood burner but things change ...... Thanks Sandie

combustibl---keil---keil@inbox.com---23/ 08/ 10
no its not combustible. even combined with straw it impossible to burn. But i would probably consider adobe bricks for an flue... IF thats what it is you are replacing??

Ceramics---Susette---Susette.beneke@wcc.govt.nz---07/ 09/ 10
Aah, found the one they built in NZ http://www.raglan.net.nz/raglan-news/earth-bag-building-learn-the-basics/ Although this hasnt been done with the ceramics (I think that is by using a blowtorch on the sand after its plastered).

Cal Earth ---Susette---susette.beneke@wcc.govt.nz---07/ 09/ 10
Bryan Innes and Boman Bock-Chung took Cal Earth's workshop last year and are now teaching workshops in NZ. Their emails are bryan@ecoshow.co.nz and bockchung@yahoo.com There are workshops in Auz soon look here http://guidingstarcreations.blogspot.com/ At the Ecoshow http://www.ecoshow.co.nz/Courses.html they have courses to build in NZ. Hope this helped. I have been doing some research (as you can see ;-) as I'd love to build my own little house in this way. Cheers, Susette

exposed adobe ---Helen---maccam@ts.co.nz---28/ 04/ 10
Kia ora I have a number of adobe bricks (excess to house building requirements).. and I am considering building an entry to my property with them. How can they best be protected from the weather? traditional lime wash? or something more protective? I am in an area that has strong westerlies, and reasonably high rainfall. Or any other suggestions for using the bricks?
