Hi, we are putting the roof on our rammed earth house near Dargaville. Rain has cause surface shedding and on one exterior wall we need to plaster/render to protect it from further weathering. Any recipes for render, ie with a cement component but earth or clay based, or a contact details for supplier of a natural plaster, would be appreciated. Cheers

Hi - I am getting a headache over researching on building a cob or adobe in situ 10m2 studio - hopefully high enough to include a loft (according to HDC this size doesn't need a building consent as long as it's on a concrete foundation). Has anyone got any previous experience, good advise or anything at all helpful to pass on about the ideal material to use, how much timber it'll need, where to source clay rich earth as here it's mainly silt etc - etc - well - if anyone out there has made something around that size I would love to hear from you. Cheers Jacqueline

Hi, You could get a copy of the NZ earth building standards. If you don't want to buy a copy, your library should have one. Even though your building may not require a building consent, they have lots of info. including tests to do to check suitability of your soil type. You should probably build it (more or less :-) to the standards esp. if you are going to have a loft space.

I think you need to go on a course, these are generally inexpensive. have a look at some back issues of the enews on the earth building web site for details of courses

I am coming to New Zealand in September for a year and have just finished a double eco-dome house (800 sq ft) in California. I am interested in teaching a workshop and collaborating on an earthbag project. I have been an associte teacher at Cal-earth for the past year. I took a permaculture design course in the States and am passionate about building in a way that empowers people and connects them to their environment. Happy building everyone, Neil Decker
